Inside CentCom at Liberty University

Just like at any other big organization, all the computers at Liberty University are wired into one ginormous network, so they can all talk to each other and share information without having to go out on the worldwide Web, as your laptop has to do at Starbucks.

That means that somebody somewhere has to manage that network and make sure all the computers keep talking to each other.

And make sure that all the computers in accounting have the software and bandwith they need to crunch all those numbers.

And make sure that all the computers in the registrar’s office have somewhere to store all those student records.

And make sure that Dr. Einstein’s hard drive doesn’t crash during the middle of his forthcoming book on the theory of relativity.

And make sure that intruders aren’t hacking their way into the school’s system in order to steal or alter important data.

Who can possibly do all of this stuff?

At Liberty, that would be Connie Allison and her crew. What Connie’s department does is called information technology, or IT, for short.

In essence, these fearless IT people run a sort of Central Command center (or, CentCom, as the military calls it) for all the computers and digital information at Liberty U.

IT professionals perform a wide range of duties, from simple stuff like installing PowerPoint onto a teacher’s PC or fixing a mouse, to more complex stuff like designing a complex computer network or programming an information database.

If you like working with computers and information, IT could be an exciting career choice.

“Change is constant in IT,” Allison says. “There is always something new to learn!

Technology is also a field where you will find smart and creative people and this makes for a fascinating work environment.”

Prepare yourself today, and tomorrow you too could be working at CentCom.
