Healthcare: Made for TV

Ever wonder why there are so many medical shows on TV?

It’s because hospitals are chock-full of action and drama.

In one moment, a life is saved or a new baby is born and everyone’s elated. In the next, vital signs change and adrenaline runs high.

Life and death. That’s healthcare at its most dramatic. The stuff of TV.

In reality, most jobs in healthcare are far less dramatic. Yet healthcare workers really do get to touch people’s lives every day, as few other professions allow.

Centra is one of the largest employers in our region, employing people at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital and Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital, as well as in health and rehabilitation centers and physician practices.

Only a small percentage of them work in the ER. What are the rest doing?

Many are doctors and nurses, of course. Others serve as physician assistants, physical therapists, psychologists, dietitians, radiology technologists, respiratory therapists, and lab technicians. Then there are support staff, such as administrative assistants, office managers, food service employees, and information technology specialists.

And these are just a few of the healthcare jobs available locally.

  • Area high schools offer a wide range of courses that can help prep you for an exciting career in healthcare.
  • Central Virginia Community College offers Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degrees in respiratory therapy, radiology, dental hygiene, EMS/paramedics, and medical lab tech studies.
  • Lynchburg General Hospital offers schools to prepare both licensed practical nurses (LPN’s) and registered nurses (RN’s).
  • Lynchburg College offers bachelor’s level nursing degrees (a four-year college degree).
  • And Liberty University offers both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing.
